Fredi Walker-Browne
I have been fortunate....
in my career to have achieved success as a Broadway performer, a theatre director, a television actress and model/ spokesperson .
As Fredi Walker, (before happily becoming “Mrs. Browne”) I was blessed with the experience of creating the role of JoAnne Jefferson in the smash hit musical RENT which won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as four Antoinette Perry Awards, the Obie, the Drama Desk and the Golden Globe Awards for Best Musical of that year, and for which I personally garnered an Obie (in concert with the fantastic ensemble that made up the RENT OBC) and a FANNY award.
The role of JoAnne was a special experience that can be compared to no other. Luckily, in my career, I’ve done several amazing roles! Among my favorites are Rafiki in THE LION KING and Erzulie in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND as well as several other great musicals including; LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY and AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ .
Though mostly known for my stage work, there have been various TV appearances including soaps and the pre-requisite Law & Order (may it run forever) and lots of commercials and voice-overs.
As a model I appeared twice in MODE magazine (a fashion magazine dedicated to plus sizes) and as a model/spokesperson for Lane Bryant’s Harlem
store opening gala in the fall of 98. I’m very proud to have performed live jazz for evening wear designer CARMEN MARC VALVO in his Spring ‘98 show, wearing a gown designed for me by Carmen, and becoming one of the rare “plus” models to appear at NYC’s prestigious 7TH ON SIXTH fashion event in the process. I was interviewed by 20/20 on the topic of women’s body issues and beauty and remain a spokesperson on the subject.
